Fat Man`s Fish Fry in Grand Rapids

The first time I have actually written a review. Only cause i feel I should. The staff was so rude I didn't wait around for the food. Rude Rude Rude!

Customer service over the phone is not the best especially around closing. The food use to be so much better. Fries were soggy, the chicken looked like it was about to fly way with all those feathers and the cat fish looked and tasted horrible.

Great staff and atmosphere here, and the food is delicious! I always stop in when town. Food made fresh when you order so, call ahead!

Usually a good place. Waited 20 minutes while customer and employee talked with each other 50 minutes total to wait. Talk on your own time. Looking for another fish place in the area. How the heck does it get worse? Went in for catfish clerk was insulting about me not wearing a mask 1 I have breathing issues and I won’t wear one because the Governor says to. Medical PROFESSIONALS say not to because it makes it worse. Don’t insult a customer and think your business is the best in town. Honestly it ain’t that hard to be a fry cook. I will NEVER GO BACK to fat mans.

Great food as well as quick service. The staff weren't wearing masks (this review was written 6/11/2020), which does pose a health risk.

How would I describe the fried chicken at Fat Man's Fish Fry?Absolutely hands down the best fried chicken I've ever had! The skin was cooked to perfection, and seasoned beautifully. The meat was moist and tender, and when combined with the crispy seasoned skin I simply could not imagine how fried chicken could taste better than what I just ate at Fat Man's Fish Fry.Another thing I noticed is how amazing the service is here. Even though the restaurant was very busy Keith and the guys were not only friendly and efficient, but they made sure every single guest left with all of the sauces and seasonings they might need which is something I usually forget. There are very few restaurants that offer this level of service and quality of food. There are even fewer that have amazing people like Keith and his team working behind the counter making sure every guest feels like family. Thanks again, and we will definitely be back soon!

I've been going here for a couple of years for take out. Staff is quick to answer any questions and make suggestions. Good food at good prices.

This place is great! It was super busy being a Friday during lent. We got the scrod meal with fries and potato salad and a pop for under 10.00! Lots of options and good size portions...I had leftovers. Also had the califlower and tried the hush puppies and both were great. The flow from ordering to getting food was slightly disorganized but it was so busy! The food was delicious and the staff so nice! There were 2 issues with orders while we were there but they were quickly resolved. We will be back!

Grand Rapids staple that I was trying for the first time and I was not disappointed! They are doing fried fish right! I tried the walleye and it was great. Not over fried or over battered. Flakey and fresh tasting. The french fries were good too and did not have any fishy flavor, so I'm assuming they keep their oils separate. Either way, can wait to go back and try some different fish.

The food was absolutely awesome! Everything was full of flavor and very tasty. The staff was very friendly and helpful when choosing from the menu.

My wife and I just tried this place for the first time and we ordered walleye, lake perch, catfish, clams nuggets, okra, liver, and gizzards, and crab cakes. Everything was awesome!!! Prices I thought were good food is excellent!!! I definitely would recommend

This was my first time ordering from this restaurant and I'm always excited to try new places but this was wildly disappointing especially for the price paid. The "beer battered fries" are literally just crinkle cut fries they probably bought from Meijer. And still did not beer batter. They also didn't follow ANY of the cooking instructions they prompt you to choose when you order. They just sent me a bunch of dry, unseasoned fish and fries. They also didn't send me the vinegar for my clam basket either. At a certain point during a global pandemic event you should decide to just close down instead of doing this nonsense. Let those people go home and stay safe if you're making them work to serve subpar food for quality prices.

Fantastic fried fish!!! I get their Fried Perch Family meal, 2 lbs of lightly battered lake perch!! They sell their own tarter sauce which is fantastic. They have a wide selection, the only down side is a small inside sit down area.

I like the fact that they have lots of different fish to pick from. You can get many different types of side dishes as well including some desserts. They have a whole wall full of beverages to pick from. Service was fast and friendly. I had the trout it was really good fish lightly battered not heavy. There are all kinds of sides that you can put on your fish while you're there or take out to go

Food was ok it was ready on time. People there were very accommodating. I ordered the catfish meal with a side of fries and the potatoes salad and a piece of chocolate cake. The potatoe salad was not good at all just didn't have enough seasoning. The catfish was ok just wasn't fryed long enough for me. The chocolate cake was great just really small. I also ordered the 12 wings which I headed were good. I really wanted the sweet potatoe fries but the guy said they didnt sell alot so they stop making them. Overall I would go back again.

Best fish in town hands down.

Fish was not too fresh it's already prepared and waiting for you to order. Some people may like that but the batter didn't stick to the fish for that crisp finish

EDIT: TO FAT MANS MANAGEMENT THERE IS NO MISUNDERSTANDING. You should either not accept Call in orders or you should be willing to make the food when the order is placed. Not refuse to cook things until the person is present. Would be 5 stars if they knew how to accept carry out orders correctly.

I enjoy the fish here. You taste the integrity of the fish while it has a nice light fry. I squeeze a little lemon and call it good, as lemon is just a way of life for me (haha). Thanks Fat Man's!

Tryed alligator for the first time today thanks to Fat mans Fish Fry

First timer here! Called to place an order and they kindly let us know it's walk ins only. Arrived at destination and the place was easy to find bc it has the wall with their name on it outside. Went in and placed our order. The nice gentleman clarified the order but we explained and pointed to what we were talking about on their large menue sign to our left on the wall and got the order corrected quickly. Masks required and a certain amount of customers alowed in at 1 time for safety (clearly stated on a sign on door when you get in). Place was clean.Our order was done surprisingly quick!Great food. 5 stars!

Love this place I drive from Big Rapids Michigan to get the ocean perch it is my favorite thing there

Oh my goodness The cooks in here are phenomenal a lot of fry places might not know what the WORKS are but they do

I hate that when I call in for my order they tell me it will be ready 10 mins after my arrival...that defeats the whole purpose of a call in order....so I started going in..then you place your order tell them the seasonings you want for them to ask you again when its put out the fryer. Dont ask for them to fry your food hard..they will fry it how they want to regardless....I actually enjoy their fish...but Hate they never cook or season my stuff like I asked...if I want hot sauce on my fries please put it there. Lol

I liked the place before I even got my food. The service was great and I could tell they wanted to make everything just right. I only got some small things, but I'll definitely keep this place in mind the next time I want a full meal.

The largest menu in Michigan, every kind of fish in the ocean and fresh water you can imagine and chicken.I love the 1/2 lb of deep fried walleye with fries.When you order wings here you get the whole wing.

The workers were really respectful and kind, but the food..not good to me..shrimp fried to hard and tiny for the Jumbo size we ordered, and the fish was over cooked, overly breaded and bland to taste. I couldn't finish because towards the small of the fish became doughy and fish inside dry. The seasoning list was a nice touch. However, they didn't add the seasoning until after cooking which left the fish unflavored in my opinion. I will say everything was hot when I recieved my food and they did have a beverage I could drink.

Smoke a fatty, then hit fat man's, you won't regret it.

The fish was great! I had the talapia special. Washed it down w/a Coke. The reason for 3 stars is the cole slaw was spoiled(tasted that way) 😕

First time visit. The staff was courteous and the food is cooked to order. So if you don't mind fresh seafood then its definitely worth the wait.
